A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer has been lynched in Mombasa for threatening a boda boda rider with a gun after allegedly failing to pay for his ride.
The deceased, who fired several shots in the air before he was neutralised by a mob, is also said to have injured two people who are currently nursing bullet wounds.
According to a police report, the drama started after boda boda rider Antony Otieno asked for his pay after transporting the deceased from Likoni Primary Vyemani Grounds on Friday.
A scuffle ensued after which the deceased opened a small bag, pulled out an AK47 rifle and fired into the air in a bid to scare the rider.
“Upon arrival, the deceased alighted from the boda boda and started making numerous phone calls,” the report stated.
“The boda boda rider began demanding payment to return, but the deceased opened his small bag, pulled out a gun, cocked it, and fired into the air to scare the boda boda rider.”
The rider managed to disarm the man while attempting to escape the fracas using the former’s motorbike.
Enraged residents who witnessed the incident then pounced on the man and killed him.
“The deceased then jumped on the motorcycle in an attempt to flee, but the boda boda rider pulled him to the ground. A struggle ensued during which the deceased fired several shots, but the boda boda rider managed to snatch the gun,” the report added.

“Inhabitants of the area then gathered and began pelting the deceased with stones, leading to his death.”
Two people, since identified as Claudia Mwashikaji and Mary Trizer, were accidentally hit by stray bullets during the melee while the rider’s nose was bitten by the deceased.
The three were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital for treatment where they are recuperating.
Officers from Inuka Police Station who visited the scene recovered the rifle, 12 rounds of ammunition, a motorcycle, a mobile phone, and four spent cartridges which have been kept as exhibits.
The body of the deceased has since been taken to Coast General Mortuary, awaiting post-mortem.
