Four prisoners escape from Magena Police Station in Kisii after breaking down their cell door.

Police in Kisii have launched a manhunt for four prisoners who escaped custody after breaking down their cell door at the Magena Police Station.

During their escape, the four are reported to have assaulted and injured an officer who was keeping guard.

According to the police report, one of the escapees used a wooden door frame from the broken cell door to hit the guard on his forehead.

“The cell sentry personnel through a phone call to the OCS said that 4 prisoners who were in the cells had broken the door of the cells and one of them hit him with a wooden frame from the door on his forehead before they escaped,” the report read.

Police officers have asked members of the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the four.

Officers drawn from both the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are working together to make sure the offenders are rearrested.

They were being held at the police station on various offences ranging from possession of drugs to assault.

Cases of prisoners casually walking out of their police cells are not something new in the country.

In a similar astonishing case earlier this year, 13 prisoners including a confessed serial killer escaped police custody by walking straight out of the Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi.

Collins Jumaisi, who had confessed to 42 murders just a few weeks earlier, banded together with 12 suspected Eritrean citizens to escape on August 20.

While confirming the incident, the DCI stated that the suspects cut a wire mesh before scaling a perimeter wall.

Further investigations revealed that the 13 prisoners might have walked straight through the front door without detection.

Five police officers who were on duty during the escape were taken into custody but later released on bond.

Jumaisi has not been rearrested, four months later.
