A family in Kiamagera Village is grappling with deep grief after receiving the KCSE results of their daughter, who passed away just two days after completing her national exams.

Nineteen-year-old Mitchelle Kemunto, who aspired to become a doctor, had been studying at a local day school while managing epilepsy with the support of her parents. What caused Mitchelle Kemunto’s death?

Kemunto’s mother, Vane Moraa, recounted the bittersweet moment she learnt her daughter had achieved a B-, a grade that qualified her for university admission.

“She was epileptic, but we managed her condition as she pursued her education. She completed her exams on November 15. I didn’t have the strength to check her results. After two days, I called her school principal, who confirmed she had scored a B-,” Moraa said.

The news has left the family in anguish, compounded by the realisation of the promising future they have lost.

“The pain is unbearable and feels fresh all over again because of her impressive results,” said Kemunto’s uncle.

The family could only visit her grave, mourning the loss of their firstborn daughter and the dreams of seeing a future doctor among them cut short.

“Her whole life, she would say, ‘Mum, I want to be a doctor,’” Moraa added.

The tragic news comes as other parents across the country celebrate their children’s academic achievements and plan their future careers.

For Kemunto’s family, her success is both a source of pride and a reminder of the dreams cut short.
