The Kenya Meteorological Department has revealed that the earth tremors experienced in parts of Nairobi and its environs on Wednesday, May 7 were due to a regional earthquake. 

In a statement, the Met Department said the earthquake had a 4.5 magnitude and originated from Longido, a town in northern Tanzania, which is near the Kenyan border.

The Department also noted that the quake happened at around 10:35 AM and occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface.

“Tremors felt in Nairobi this morning were due to a regional earthquake: M 4.5 – 81 km WNW of Longido, Tanzania, Time: 07 May 2025, 10:35 AM (EAT), Location: 2.574°S, 35.983°E, Depth: 10.0 km, Intensity: III (Felt). The tremors were caused by shock waves from this earthquake,” the Met Department stated.

A section of Nairobi residents on Wednesday reported experiencing a tremor between 10:30 am and 10:40 am.

Areas that reportedly experienced the tremor include Westlands, Parklands, Kangemi, Mlolongo, Kiambu Road, and Mombasa Road.

According to Earthquake Monitor, the tremor was first experienced in Kajiado before it spread to neighboring areas.

“We are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Nairobi, Nairobi County, Kenya on 7 May 2025 (GMT) at approximately 07:36 GMT.

“There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes,” the Earthquake Monitor said in a statement.
