The Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked fresh controversy after ordering Turkish nationals, including embassy staff, to leave Uganda.
In a statement shared on his social media account, Muhoozi said all Turks must leave Uganda within 30 days. The statement did not give clear reasons for the order.
This development comes after several months of growing tension between Muhoozi and Turkey.
The dispute started in early April when Muhoozi posted a series of critical messages on social media.
He demanded that Turkey pay Uganda one billion dollars. He argued that Uganda deserved compensation for its security role in the region, especially its military operations against al-Shabaab in Somalia.
Muhoozi later threatened to sever diplomatic ties with Turkey, close the Turkish embassy in Kampala, and stop Turkish Airlines from operating in Uganda.
The situation escalated further when Muhoozi made controversial comments asking Turkey to send him the most beautiful woman in the country as a wife. These remarks drew widespread criticism.
Turkey responded cautiously to the statements. Officials from the ruling AK Party said the remarks had no diplomatic basis and called for continued friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
The latest 30-day ultimatum has added more pressure to the already-strained relationship.
