Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has designated Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o to lead ODM during periods of his absence.

The decision by Raila is in light of his grueling campaign schedule and the need for him to focus on his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson seat.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna made the announcement on Wednesday following a meeting of the Central Management Committee chaired by Raila to deliberate on internal party affairs and also matters affecting the people and the nation of Kenya at large.

“These regular meetings allow us to review the current state of affairs as a Party founded on values of democracy, multi-party democracy and participation of the people,” he said.

Sifuna added that ODM conducts its affairs with openness and always brief the public of the deliberations and resolutions of these meetings.

“There really is therefore is no need for the sort of speculation, innuendo, and propaganda that surround our meetings,” he stated.

The party in its announcement, also summoned a section of party members from Kakamega County including Governor Fernandes Barasa following wrangles witnessed at the County Assembly.

ODM accused Barasa of instigating rivalry among the party politicians in Kakamega by rallying a section of the members against the designated Majority Leader in the County Assembly, Geoffrey Ondiro.

“Our directive has however been repeatedly frustrated by individuals led by the County Governor, the Speaker and the former leader of Majority Maina,” Sifuna claimed.

“The Committee has therefore resolved to summon the three to appear before it at a date to be communicated.”

The party further designated the party deputy leaders, Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi to resolve party wrangles in Kilifi County.

According to Sifuna, the two deputy party leaders would work jointly with the party’s National Organizing Secretary Ahmed Abdisalan to address the matter.

“All party members must continue to remain disciplined and avoid actions and words that undermine the Party and its organs,” Sifuna warned.

“Members are reminded that all sanctioned Party meetings must and shall be organized and communicated through the National Secretariat,” he added.
