Protests rocked Elburgon, Nakuru county, on Sunday morning, January 19, after an alleged incident of murder of a political activist

Protests rocked Elburgon, Nakuru county, on Sunday morning, January 19, after an alleged incident of murder of a political activist.

According to sources, a youth leader deemed a government critic was found dead in Molo.

Identified as Richard Otieno, alias Molo President, the deceased was reportedly hit with an axe by unknown assailants.

The locals stormed a morgue the body had been booked into and took it.

They went to the streets with it, demanding justice on the deceased’s behalf.

Otieno, an aspiring ward representative in the Molo constituency, was eulogised as a vibrant leader who championed the rights of the lowly in society.

Police were yet to comment on the state and progress of the investigations at the time of publication.

The politician’s murder came days after that of an official of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, the acting Kilifi County elections manager, was killed on January 4 at her home in Kisauni, Mombasa.

IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan disclosed that the deceased was attacked alongside her son, who sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital.

“The IEBC fraternity is saddened by her death and expresses its deepest condolences to Ms Aisha’s family, friends and colleagues for the tragic loss. The IEBC assures the family and friends that it will journey with them during this period of profound sorrow,” Marjan stated.

The IEBC CEO urged investigative agencies to expedite the inquiry into Akinyi’s death and ensure her killers are arrested.

Akinyi joined IEBC in 2012 as a Constituency Elections Coordinator for Nyali and was first deployed to Kilifi South.

She later rose through the ranks to the position of Acting County Elections Manager for Kilifi County.
