Multiple human bodies have been discovered in a suspected mass grave in Mwingi Town, Kitui County, sparking fear among residents after a series of similar cases.

On Tuesday, June 9, detectives cordoned off the site and a forensic team commenced an exhumation exercise, which led to the recovery of four bodies in varying states of decomposition.

This incident follows the discovery of a separate dismembered body on June 8, and comes a month after reports of two other mutilated bodies being found in the same vicinity.

“It appears that people are being killed somewhere unknown and their bodies are abandoned here just next to the town,” said Morris Kinyatta, a resident of Mwingi.

Residents have raised suspicions of a possible serial killer or criminal syndicate operating in the area near Kasina Primary School, describing the incident as shocking and noting that the bodies appeared to have been deliberately folded and properly buried.

Local leaders have raised alarm over the security situation, highlighting that the previously discovered bodies remain unaccounted for.

“As Mwingi residents, and as their leader, we are very alarmed. Recently, we lost a girl, and we still do not know what happened to her. Another two bodies, female and male, were also discovered, and to date, we are yet to know what happened,” said Kitui Women Representative Irene Kasalu.

She added, “We are asking for security to be beefed up at Mwingi and conduct very fast investigations so that we may know who the victims are.”

In response, Mwingi Central Police Commander Anthony Maina has urged members of the public with missing relatives to report to the Mwingi Central Police Sub-County Headquarters.

Police have assured residents that further investigations are underway as they continue to process the site, while the recovered remains have been transferred to the Mwingi General Hospital Mortuary awaiting identification and autopsy.

The discovery in Kitui comes as neighbouring Makueni County is also grappling with cases of unidentified and unclaimed bodies, which in some cases may be disposed of in mass graves.

In a Gazette Notice dated June 5, the county government listed a total of 11 unclaimed bodies held at the Makueni County Referral Hospital Farewell Home, including two adult females, eight adult males, and one fetus, that have been at the facility for periods ranging from six months to two years.

Families who may have lost relatives during the stated timeframe have been urged to visit the farewell home for identification and claiming of the bodies within 14 days.

If no claim is made within the prescribed period, the county government will seek court authorisation to dispose of the remains.
