Ruto issues a directive to suspend some benefits and allowances for civil servants to avoid wasteful spending.

Following a decision from President William Ruto, some benefits for civil servants in all government ministries will be eliminated.

All directors, as well as heads of units, among others, encouraged all departments to amend their budgets in a memo dated Friday, November 4 issued to all director generals in an effort to reduce government spending.

The departments were instructed in the letter, which was signed by the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Treasury, to halt all new training as well as approvals for the purchase of office furniture, fixtures, computers, and ICT supplies.

Additionally, it was mandated for all Ministries to host task force meetings and meetings in their boardrooms rather than paying for pricey hotel space.

The letter further directed them to limit requisition for lunches and suspend approvals for workshops and retreats. Retreats may only be permissible in exceptional circumstances.

“Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have been directed to revise their budgets downwards in line with budget cuts recently announced.

“The budget cuts have targeted various items such as local and foreign training, office and general supplies, hospitality supplies and services, local and foreign travel, purchase of office furniture, purchase of office equipment, and various projects that have low absorption rates and/or challenges of implementation,” read the statement in part.

In addition, the Ministry of Treasury stated that it has already complied with the instruction and asked all other Ministries to do the same.

This happened after the head of state made a commitment to cut government spending and waste by making at least Ksh300 billion in annual savings.

Recently, Kenya’s budget exceeded Ksh3 trillion, placing pressure on the public to pay for government spending.
