Security officers in Mandera County have been placed on high alert after a suspected al-Shabaab attack on Monday, May 25.

According to reports by security agencies, the suspected militants attempted an attack on the Sheikhbarrow Border Police Unit in Lafey Sub-County at around 6.45 pm, but their plan was foiled by security agencies.

The attackers engaged security personnel with what is said to be rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and machine gun fire.

However, police responded swiftly, leading to an exchange of fire that lasted for at least 10 minutes before the attackers were pushed back.

No casualties were reported from the attempted siege, with the militants quelled before they could inflict serious damage.

Following the incident, anti-terror security personnel were deployed to conduct a clearance in the area as the authority continued to assess the situation.

They searched the camp, recovering assorted materials linked to al-Shabaab, including communication devices, uniforms and ammunition.

The materials were secured for examination even as the investigation into the matter intensifies.

The Monday evening attack has raised serious security concerns, especially for those living in the northeastern region.

Northern Kenya has for years faced security issues following sustained attacks by the al-Shabaab, who reportedly get to Kenya through the country’s border with Somalia.

Recently, six members of the same family were killed by gunmen suspected to be al-Shabaab militants, in the same county as they were travelling using a public service vehicle.

The gunmen ambushed the vehicle, opening fire before fleeing the scene.

Several other passengers sustained injuries in the attack, with local response teams rushing to the scene as authorities launched investigations into the incident.
