A senior Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer dies after his vehicle plunged into the Mwachome River in Msambweni, Kwale County.

Msambweni police boss Francis Gachoki, who confirmed the incident on Monday morning, said the vehicle, which was travelling from Msambweni to Likoni, lost control before plunging into the Mwachema River at the bridge linking Diani and Tiwi areas.

“The vehicle lost control just before the bridge and rolled several times before landing on the riverbed. His body was ejected from the vehicle during the accident,” said Mr Gachoki.

He added that the KWS officer may have been on his way to work as his belongings, including his uniform, were found in the wreckage of the car, which was towed to Diani Police Station.

Mr Gachoki said the officer was driving his personal vehicle, a Toyota RAV4. His colleagues were later informed of the incident.

Witnesses at the scene said the deceased was the only occupant of the vehicle that lost control on the bridge.

Traffic at the scene along the Likoni-Lungalunga highway was disrupted after hundreds of locals stopped to observe the incident.

“We are happy that the police arrived on time because some people were already trying to steal his gun and other valuables he had in his car,” said Ali Namatsi , one of the witnesses.

He said the accident happened a few minutes before 7am.

Mr Gachoki said his body was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital morgue in Mombasa County as police continue investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
