A rescue operation was launched on Friday morning after a train collided with a school bus carrying pupils along the Gilgil-Nyahururu road in Nakuru County.

The bus, belonging to Teresia School, was reportedly transporting learners to school when the accident occurred at a railway crossing in the Gilgil area.

Preliminary reports indicate that the train rammed into the bus before pushing it for a short distance, causing panic among pupils and residents who rushed to the scene.

Emergency responders, police officers, and members of the public quickly arrived at the scene to assist in rescue efforts and provide medical attention to those affected.

Fortunately, no fatalities were immediately reported following the incident, but reports indicated that some pupils sustained injuries and were attended to by medical personnel at the scene.

The police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the collision, including whether the bus driver observed railway crossing safety procedures before attempting to cross the tracks.

The accident caused temporary traffic disruption along the busy Gilgil-Nyahururu road as rescue operations and clearance efforts continued.

While train accidents are rare, this is not the first time an accident involving a train and a bus has been reported in Nakuru County.

In August last year, eight people died after a train rammed into a Kenya Pipeline company bus near the Morendat training and conference centre in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

A police report revealed that the tragic incident occurred as the KPC bus, which was ferrying employees from the MTCC after a morning shift, attempted to cross the railway line.

Moments after the accident, Kenya Railways Corporation issued a strong warning to members of the public, including motorists, urging them to be vigilant when approaching railway crossings.

“Motorists and the general public are advised to take caution when crossing the railway line at level crossings to avoid collision with approaching trains,” Kenya Railways cautioned.
