DP Rigathi Gachagua has hit out at a section of Members of Parliament over plans to table an impeachment motion to oust him from his current position

DP Rigathi Gachagua has hit out at a section of Members of Parliament over plans to table an impeachment motion to oust him from his current position.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hit out at individuals whom he said were threatening to plan his removal him from office.

Addressing traders at Wakulima Market in Nairobi on Friday, September 20, Gachagua stated that he would not be intimidated by threats of impeachment.

He affirmed that he was elected by Kenyans and only they have the power to remove him from office when the time comes.

Gachagua further claimed that certain individuals were bribing lawmakers to push for his impeachment.

“They are threatening me that they will assemble MPs to impeach me. They are assembling MPs and bribing them so that they can sell me fear. I was voted in by Kenyans and not MPs. Only Kenyans can remove me from my seat when the time comes,” Gachagua stated amid cheers.

He added, “Those people who are planning this, please don’t test us. And let me tell those who are insulting me that they are not insulting me but the people that voted for me.”

The DP while insisting on the matter, also took a swipe at Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja over his controversial decision to forcefully relocate traders from Wakulima Market.

Gachagua accused the city governor of betraying the traders by failing to heed their demands despite receiving immense support from them during the last elections.

“When we were campaigning at Wakukima market, there were a lot of people and no one had a problem after receiving many votes, they are now claiming that there is a congestion problem in the CBD. Why didn’t they point that out during the campaign period,” the DP alleged.

The Deputy President’s allies, at the same event also took turns criticising Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah for constantly disrepecting and disparaging Gachagua in public forums.

“Kimani Ichung’wah insults DP Gachagua while he is standing next to the President and the President does not reprimand him,” said Embasi North MP James Gakuya.

His remarks comes after reports emerged that a section of MPs were planning to table an impeachment motion against him in parliament.

On Thursday, September 12, 48 MPs from the Mt. Kenya region endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to be their kingpin.

The lawmakers in a statement said that there was a need to have a link that would create a connection with the executive on matters of development.

“Accordingly, we, as the elected leaders from this region and its Diaspora on our own behalf and that of our people, unanimously resolve that our link to the National Government be the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration Prof. Kithure Kindiki, ” read part of the statement.
