The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has closed down 13 petrol stations and fined three others for selling adulterated fuel.
In a notice on Monday, September 30, EPRA stated that the action was taken as part of its routine program to monitor the quality of petroleum in the country.
The regulatory authority disclosed that between July and September 2024, it conducted tests at 1,321 petroleum sites, where 17 stations were found to be non-compliant.
“The Authority undertakes a program of continuous monitoring of the quality of petroleum motor fuels on sale, transport, and storage throughout the country.
“During the period July – September 2024, a total of 5,854 tests were conducted at 1,321 petroleum sites. From the tests, 1,304 (98.71%) of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from Seventeen, 17 (1.29%) sites turned out to be non-compliant,” EPRA stated.
Among the petrol stations closed include Safari Oil Service Station in Kamalat, Kajiado County, Prijam Filling Station in Naromoru (Nyeri), Tawa Filling Station in Tawa (Makueni), Lengut Filling Station in Lengut (Uasin Gishu), Re-Fresh Up Energy Filling Station in Talket (Uasin Gishu), Sikhendu Filling Station in Sikhendu (Trans Nzoia) and Chombo Filling Station in Chepkorio (Elgeyo Marakwet).
Others are Birgen Filling Station in Mulot (Narok), Top Energy Filling Station in Ombeyi Market (Kisumu), Robinson Filling Station in Labuiywo (Nandi), Murinya Filling Station in Murinya (Meru), Murathi Elijah Filling Station in Kipkona (Meru) and Suntone Service Station in Busia.

EPRA also announced that it closed Super Petrol dispensing pumps at Green Field Service Station in Kanamai, Kilifi County.
Mari Filling Station in Gathange, Kiambu County, was reopened after paying taxes and penalties amounting to Ksh115,990 while Home Depo Filling Station in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, was reopened after paying taxes and penalties amounting to Ksh152,306.
Similarly, Bendera Service Station in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, was reopened after upgrading the product and paying taxes and penalties amounting to Ksh304,806 after it was found selling Super Petrol meant for export and contaminated with domestic Kerosine.
EPRA asked members of the public to report suspected cases of petroleum adulteration through the hotline number 0709366000 or USSD code *363# or SMS service code 40850.
