Former Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba credited himself with turning around sports in Kenya.

In his first public appearance since he was dismissed as Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba remarked that in hindsight he had given his best to the job.

Speaking at Meru University of Science and Technology, Namwamba credited himself with turning around sports in Kenya.

In particular, he highlighted Kenya’s winning bid to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027 and Harambee Junior Starlets qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup as some of his major achievements.

“I believe I have done a fantastic job. I mean we have revived sports. We got FIFA to lift the suspension of football and we have AFCON coming to Kenya for the first time,” Namwamba stated.

The former Sports Cabinet Secretary who was attending the National Autocross Competition remarked that motorsport had roared back into life in Kenya during his tenure.

“We have taken a team to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in Kenyan history,” he reiterated the success of Junior Starlets.

Namwamba remained optimistic that his track record could see him back in President William Ruto’s cabinet.

“There are success stories all over the place but at the end of the day, it is up to the president to decide how he wishes to move forward from this point,” Namwamba spoke of the future.

According to the former CS, being appointed to such a role is a privilege and honour and should not be seen by any select group of people as an entitlement or right.

“There are over 50 million Kenyans who deserve to occupy any public office and given a chance they would certainly offer their very best,” he added.

Reflecting on his political journey, Namwamba stated that he was privileged to be appointed by three different Presidents to serve the country in different capacities.

Ababu Namwamba was serving his second stint as sports minister having held a similar position under late President Mwai Kibaki from 2012 to 2013.

Former President Uhuru Kenya in 2018 appointed Namwamba as the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
