Gachagua breaks silence on controversial Adani, JKIA deal
DP Rigathi Gachagua distances himself from the controversial Adani, JKIA (Jomo Kenyatta International Airport) takeover deal.
Speaking to vernacular radio stations from the Mt. Kenya East region on Sunday, September 29, the deputy president distanced himself from the controversial deal.
Gachagua disclosed that he had no idea about the entire deal, given that he was not involved in the negotiations.
The deputy president stated that just like a majority of Kenyans he heard about the deal through social media and newspapers.
Gachagua alleged that a senior official in the Kenya Kwanza administration threatened him after he failed to defend the controversial deal at a public function.
“Adani deal I came to learn about it through social media and newspapers. I was never informed. The other day, I was in Kitale for a funeral and Senator Onyonka rose and spoke strongly against the Adani deal. However, in my speech, I stayed clear of the matter. “Later someone senior in the government called and asked me why I didn’t defend the government against Onyonka’s accusations. I told him I can’t defend what I didn’t know. I wasn’t involved in the Adani negotiations; I don’t know what it is, and when I listen to the ground, people don’t like it,” Gachagua said.

Meanwhile, Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition parties filed a lawsuit to challenge Adani Group’s acquisition of JKIA.
The Wiper Party, KANU, DAP Kenya, and the Jubilee Party joined in the matter of the illegal alienation of JKIA, a strategic national asset, against Adani Airports Holdings and others.
Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka said in a tweet on Monday, September 23, that the first petition against the Indian firm’s proposal was amended to include the three parties.
In the first hearing, the High Court granted prayers to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and issued an order blocking the implementation of Adani Airports PLC’s proposal to take over the airport.
