Daystar University cancels deal with Israel after public outcry over Gaza war.

Daystar University has announced the revocation of its deal with Israel, which sought to establish a green space at the university dubbed Zion Forest.

The decision by the university on Wednesday, December 18, follows public backlash over the war in Gaza.

A section of Kenyans took social media to criticise the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Daystar University and the Israeli embassy in Kenya, arguing that it goes against the principles of the institution.

Those leading the campaign against the deal stated that it indirectly endorses the ongoing conflict and human rights violations inflicted upon the Palestinian people by the Israeli state.

Some had questioned the appropriateness of the deal given the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas over the last 14 days, which has seen more than 45,000 Palestinians killed.

While revoking the deal, Daystar University Vice Chancellor Laban Ayiro said the institution does not support the humanitarian conflicts in the Middle East.

“We are not in any way supporting the ongoing humanitarian conflict in the Middle East. Daystar University esteems the sanctity of life and advocates for the peaceful co-existence of humanity,” Ayiro said.
