Maseno University lecturer killed in suspected land dispute in Homa Bay
Residents of Kabong’o Village in Rachuonyo East Sub-county, Homa Bay, are mourning the death of a Maseno University lecturer who was allegedly killed by his neighbour on Saturday evening.
The deceased, Dr. Daniel Odhiambo Dondi, a lecturer in the Finance Department at Maseno University, was attacked while returning home after leaving a farm worker grazing cattle in a nearby field.
According to his father, Michael Dondi, the suspect is believed to have ambushed Dr. Odhiambo by hiding in a maize plantation near his home. As the lecturer approached his gate, he was allegedly struck on the head with a panga.
The attack left Dr. Odhiambo with severe injuries, causing him to collapse. Witnesses said the assailant continued attacking him while he lay on the ground.
His daughter, who reportedly witnessed the incident, raised an alarm, prompting the attacker to stop. The suspect allegedly chased the girl, forcing her to run into the house and lock herself inside for safety.
Michael Dondi said he rushed to the scene after hearing his granddaughter screaming for help but found his son already dead.
The family revealed that Dr. Odhiambo and the suspect had been involved in a long-standing dispute that had reached the courts. The lecturer had reportedly filed a case accusing the neighbour of destroying his property, including cutting down trees and grazing livestock on his crops.
The matter was scheduled for hearing in September.

Michael Dondi claimed the conflict had persisted for years, despite several attempts to resolve it amicably. He appealed to security agencies to ensure justice is served.
Local leaders also condemned the killing. Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) official Rose Otieno called on security agencies to strengthen security and protect residents from similar incidents.
Dr. Odhiambo’s body was taken to Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital Mortuary in Oyugis.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem confirmed that the suspect had been arrested and was being held at Ringa Police Station. According to the police commander, the suspect claims the dispute was related to land ownership.
Police have urged residents to seek legal avenues when resolving disputes and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
