NPS confirms missing person report for Activist Davis Lichuma

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed it is aware of growing allegations of enforced disappearances and torture that have been spreading across mainstream and social media platforms.

Through a statement on June 28, police admitted that there have been a number of reports in several of their stations linking reportedly missing persons.

Among those reported missing is Davis Lichuma, whose case was formally filed at Central Police Station in Nairobi, marking one of the few officially acknowledged disappearance reports.

“The National Police Service (NPS) has noted allegations circulating in mainstream and social media regarding enforced disappearances and torture,” stated NPS.

“Furthermore, we acknowledge receipt of a report of a missing person, namely Davis Lichuma, which was made at Central Police Station in Nairobi,” stated NPS.

The NPS says it has received the report and has committed to pursuing the matter through a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation.

The statement further urges anyone with information about enforced disappearances, torture, or any form of human rights abuse to walk into the nearest police station and report.

“We therefore urge anyone with information or specific allegations of enforced disappearance, torture, or other human rights violations to report the matter immediately at the nearest police station,” stated NPS.

The release of this statement comes hours after families of the enforced disappearance persons, led by human rights groups such as Vocal Africa, and the retired Chief Justice David Maraga issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government demanding the release of their children.

The families of missing activists Davis Lichuma, Macmillan Kiari, and Abdulaziz Molo, alias Zizo, threatened to trigger countrywide demonstrations if the government does not heed their demands.
