Ruto chairs UDA PG meeting ahead of deal with Raila

President William Ruto on Friday, March 7 chaired the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Parliamentary Group meeting at State House Nairobi ahead of the unveiling of his agreement with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

In a statement after the meeting, President Ruto said It is time to put the country and the interests of the people ahead of other things.

The Head of State noted that his government will work with anyone to take the country forward.

“This is the time to put Kenya and the people ahead of any other consideration. We will work together, our political inclinations notwithstanding, to take our country forward. Kenya, and the people, must succeed. At State House, Nairobi, chaired the Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group meeting,” Ruto stated.

The PG meeting was also attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, and UDA Governors. 

Ruto and Raila are expected to unveil their cooperation agreement today at an event set to be held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).

It is understood that during the State House meeting, Ruto defended the cooperation agreement with Raila and reassured his MPs amid reports of government changes to accommodate ODM.

As part of the deal, Kenya Kwanza has already ceded several parliamentary committee leadership positions to ODM, and Raila is expected to nominate additional allies to the Cabinet.

Nandi Senator in a statement said the unveiling of the agreement would deepen the broad-based government arrangement and foster peace in the country.

“Today at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) the Kenya Kwanza administration will sign a working partnership with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM ) Party to deepen and widen broad-based arrangement. This shall foster national unity, peace, equity development, and prosperity of our nation,” said Cherargei.

Meanwhile, Raila is chairing a parallel meeting with his party’s Central Management Committee (CMC)—ODM’s top decision-making organ—to brief his allies on the agreement with Ruto.

The CMC consists of top ODM officials, including the Chairperson, Secretary-General, Deputy Party Leaders, National Treasurer, and Executive Director.

The former Prime Minister on Thursday concluded his countrywide tour of consulting his supporters on his next move.

He held his last meeting in Nairobi where he met ODM Party leadership from the county including; Edwin Sifuna, MP George Aladwa, Ken Ngondi, Speaker Nairobi County Assembly, and MCAs.
