The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been ranked the best university in Kenya and placed among the top seven per cent of universities globally in the latest rankings released by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR).

According to the 2026 CWUR Global 2000 list, UoN was ranked 1,425th out of 21,291 universities assessed worldwide, cementing its position as Kenya’s leading institution of higher learning.

The ranking also placed the university 37th in Africa, making it one of the continent’s highest-performing institutions in teaching, research, employability and academic excellence.

The latest ranking has seen the University of Nairobi reclaim the top spot nationally after overtaking Kenyatta University, which was ranked as Kenya’s leading university in the 2025 CWUR rankings.

In a statement, the University of Nairobi said the recognition reflects the quality of its scholars and the competitiveness of its graduates on the global stage.

“The University of Nairobi is now ranked in the top 7 per cent of universities on the planet,” the institution said, adding that the achievement shows its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, innovation and service to society.

The university also highlighted its strong performance in research, where it was ranked 1,371st globally, and graduate employability, where it placed 1,596th worldwide.

Within Africa, South African universities dominated the rankings, with the University of the Witwatersrand emerging as the top-ranked institution on the continent.

At the same time, the University of Cape Town was ranked second in Africa, while Stellenbosch University secured the third position.

Globally, Harvard University retained its position as the world’s leading university, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University.

The CWUR rankings evaluate universities based on factors including quality of education, alumni employment, faculty achievements and research performance.

Unlike some global rankings that rely on surveys and institutional submissions, CWUR bases its assessment on measurable performance indicators.
