Former Governor Rasanga declares Siaya Senate bid

Former Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga has officially declared his candidature for the Siaya County senatorial seat in the upcoming general election and stated that he does not fear competing against the incumbent, Dr. Oburu Oginga.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service held at his home in Segere, the pioneer governor announced his legislative bid while directly addressing a political showdown with Dr. Oginga. He accused the incumbent of reneging on a prior gentleman’s agreement regarding the seat.

”I declare that I will be running for the seat of the Senator for Siaya in the coming year. This is because of, number one, my track record,” Rasanga told the gathering, pointing to his 10-year experience at the helm of the county executive.

Addressing the looming nomination battle within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party against Dr. Oginga, Rasanga claimed the incumbent broke a promise to serve only one term.

”When he was going to contest, we had agreed that he goes that term and then he leaves me also to go,” Rasanga stated. “Me, I don’t fear anybody. Let him come na tuonane, mundu khu mundu [and we see each other, man to man].”

Despite the brewing rivalry, Rasanga affirmed his deep roots within the party, stating it would take a ‘nyundo’ (hammer) to eject him from ODM. However, he signaled that his senatorial ambition would not be derailed, noting that alternative routes like running as an independent candidate remain open if the party primaries are compromised.

Switching to his legislative agenda, the former county boss argued that current senatorial oversight has failed to manage county fiscal policies. He specifically targeted the persistent challenge of pending bills across devolved units.

Drawing from his ongoing PhD research in procurement, Rasanga promised to champion key legislative amendments in the Senate. These include increasing the mandatory budget allocation for vulnerable groups from 30% to 45% and ring-fencing funds for the local Jua Kali informal sector.

He also vowed to introduce strict legislation to stop county fiscal leakages, mandating that Siaya’s KSh 10 billion annual budget be spent strictly within its borders and requiring all county employees to reside within the county.
