President William Ruto has revisited his promise to have internet supplied throughout the country.

Speaking in Kwale on Saturday, July 27, the president revealed that the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) had been contracted to ensure connectivity across all the technical colleges and wards.

The move aims to actuate the colleges and hubs set up with computers to equip the youth with digital skills to leverage the internet’s potential to earn a living.

“We want to use the digital space to make sure we have jobs for the young people of the Republic of Kenya. We have contracted Kenya Power to deliver internet in all our technical training colleges and in all wards in Kenya to empower our youth to get jobs in the digital space,” said Ruto.

Internet connectivity and free calls were among Ruto’s many campaign pledges in the run-up to the 2022 presidential election.

He said the free calls would enable the enterprising Kenyans to undertake their businesses without the worries of internet and phone call costs across the mobile networks.

Ruto said that the internet programme would be implemented with a similar modality of the the last-mile electricity connectivity implemented by former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.

Ruto said KSh 38 billion would be splashed to install the internet spots in all the 29000 market centres in the country.

The internet would be supplied via the fibre cables laid on the Kenya Power transmission lines to reach the 18.5 million connected to power.

In early 2023, Ruto promised to establish a digital hub in all the 1,450 wards in the country.

The plan was part of actualising the digital superhighway potential and creating jobs for the youth. Ruto made the promise after meeting the secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, in Nairobi.

He said the government would build 100,000 kilometres of digital superhighway to enable digital access across the country.
