Woman dies after acid attack by masked assailants in Embu

A 27-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries after unknown assailants splashed her body with highly concentrated acidic liquid in Kiritiri Town in Embu County.

The deceased, identified as Jackline Wanjiru, who is a mother of one, was reportedly heading to the miraa market on Friday morning at around 5.30 am when the incident occurred.

Preliminary reports indicated that the attackers also splashed the highly corrosive liquid on the boda boda rider who the deceased had hired during the dawn attack in which many residents speculated was premeditated and personal.

According to witnesses, Wanjiru had hired a boda boda rider, John Juma, to take her to the market before they were abruptly intercepted by another motorbike carrying two masked and hooded assailants.

The attackers are said to have splashed a liquid suspected to be acid on the two victims without any confrontation before fleeing under the cover of darkness.

Residents who heard loud screams rushed to the area and found the victims writhing in pain on the ground with severe burns.

“I found Jackie almost naked, as her cloth had been burnt by the acid as well as her body from the neck all the way down to the feet,” said witness Emmah Wawira.

She said with the help of other Good Samaritans, they quickly organized for transport and rushed Wanjiru to a nearby hospital for first aid, while Juma rode himself to hospital despite sustaining burns on the back of his head and hands.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Wanjiru was later referred to Embu Level Five Hospital for specialised treatment. However, she succumbed to the burns while undergoing treatment.

Her boda boda rider is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

Juma, speaking at the hospital, said he was not able to identify the assailants as it was dark and they were masked.

The brutal attack has left residents shocked, with family members and friends demanding swift investigations and the arrest of those behind what they described as a vicious and inhumane act.

Police have launched investigations into the incident as detectives seek to establish the motive behind the attack and unmask the assailants.
