President Ruto announces the return of Kazi Mtaani project from next week, an initiative started by Former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

President William Ruto on Monday while on a development tour in Nakuru County announced the return of Kazi Mtaani.

The program which had been rolled out by former President Uhuru Kenyatta was discontinued in September 2022 by the Head of State arguing it was used as a conduit to plunder public resources.

While in Nakuru, Ruto stated that he had listened to Kenyans who wanted the return of the program and it would roll out starting next week.

“There are women here who have told me they want Kazi Mtaani. In that Kazi Mtaani, I have said starting next week, 500 people will be working here under that plan,” he announced.

“This is so that we can make sure more young people can get employment opportunities.”

The program enables eligible Kenyan youth to take up cleaning up exercise of government and public infrastructure in exchange for a daily stipend.

Apart from accusing the former administration of using the project to loot public resources, Ruto further claimed there were more dignified jobs the youth could undertake to earn a living.

“Kazi Mtaani is outdated now, the work now is building affordable houses. We will have enough job opportunities for our young people without using them to collect garbage,” Ruto stated then.

At the time, Kazi Mtaani used to employ 500 youth from every ward on a rotational basis.

According to the new directive by the President, similarly, the return of the Kazi Mtaani Programme will see 500 youth contracted from every region.

The Kazi Mtaani programme will complement other initiatives rolled out by the Kenya Kwanza administration to eliminate unemployment in the country.

They include and not limited to; digital job creation, human labour export, and affordable housing programme.
