Dr Gikonyo clarifies details of Ruto’s call during Gachagua impeachment
A cardiologist has told the High Court that President William Ruto personally called him while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was admitted to Karen Hospital, seeking an update on his medical condition.
Dr Daniel Gikonyo, who testified before a three-judge bench on Wednesday, said the call came on October 17, 2024, when Gachagua had been admitted after complaining of severe chest pain.
He told the court that during the conversation, he provided a general update on the patient’s condition while medical assessments were still ongoing.
“I did receive a call from the President asking the status of the patient, and I responded accordingly,” Dr Gikonyo said.
He explained that at the time of the initial communication, he informed the caller that doctors were still conducting tests.
“I indicated that we were in the process of doing various tests. As soon as I had a conclusion, I said I would communicate the findings,” he added.

Dr Gikonyo further told the court that more detailed medical information was only disclosed after he obtained clearance from the patient.
He maintained that he acted within standard medical practice and professional ethics, stressing that patient confidentiality remained central throughout his engagement.
“I had to seek clearance from the patient, which he granted,” he said.
The testimony came during cross-examination by lawyers representing respondents in a petition challenging aspects of Gachagua’s impeachment.
The court also heard that the communication took place during a politically sensitive period, when questions were being raised over Gachagua’s fitness to participate in impeachment proceedings.
Dr Gikonyo’s evidence now forms part of broader material being examined by the court on whether the former Deputy President was medically unfit during the impeachment sessions in October 2024.
